It's a hybrid symbol crossed between the heraldry of the Japanese Samurai and a sign on clothes worn in Ghana, Africa.
I didn't make this, this was made by Jason a Pinguy OS user. This is the overall look of the logo I would like to use. If the community thinks they can improve it please post them here and we will vote on which one to use.
We only need 3 images.
logo.png (http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/9845/logoopm.png) for the Plymouth theme. 128x128px
mintMenu.png (http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/9725/mintmenu.png) for the mint menu. 22x22px
distributor-logo.png (http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/7214/distributorlogo.png) for the distributor main menu button. 24x24px
The original image I gave Jason to work from was this:

It looks good. There's also a hint of yin and yang in there too!
-
Nice Logo. :D
-
Awesome. The idea.
The background needs less focus, and the logo less transparency. It's almost invisible, which defeats the purpose. It's a LOGO it's meant to be seen.
That could be a interesting default wallpaper, but not the logo in itself.
I can't do better, I'm a disaster in GIMP, and I don't have a windows installation any more. But, I do have opinions, lol, hope you don't mind.
-
I like the logo and concept. But perhaps it could have some reference to Ubuntu, as that is PinguyOS' root.... maybe dropping the background image and adding Ubuntu-ness in the colour scheme.?
-
Well, it may be my imagination, or the fact that for me it's almost 5 AM, but I kind of see Ubuntu there.
Just rotate the bottom part of the wave to the form a circle, and it does have some likenesses to Ubuntu logo.
:)
-
Oh I see that as well. I was referring to the colour scheme of the logo minus the background image.
-
Hi guys
I have the logo with out the background which was done as a very quick wallpaper.
i also noted the ubuntu and was going to put together a ubuntuised version
if you can wait a couple of days I will release the svg and we can all work on the same file.
Jason
-
Thanks jason ;D
-
Great. Jason, there's no real hurry... :)
-
ubuntu/pinguyish
however i think there is a need to be careful as its not an official release
still fun!
-
ah, very nice.
-
cant upload the SVG to here so see share on dropbox to down load and use
the symbol itself is all combined so cannot be edited too much but can be changed fill and stroke.
some of the svg are not showing up right in a browser so download.
I use Inkscape so everything is vector scalable, Inkscape would make a good default graphics app hint hint!

WoW! Love it.
Just a couple of things I would change. the poweredby.png should use the same Gray colour as the Elementary theme or a dark blue fading into light blue like on the default wallpaper, same with the pinguyloadsplash 1900x1200.png. I also think the logo should try and fill most of the circle.
I know you probably spent a lot of time on this but I do have to be honest with you. I'm not really a fan of pinguybuntulogo.png
-
Nice! I really like the Powered By Pinguy, very Pro looking. The pinguyubuntulogo might benefit from some of the same effects as the powered by pinguy logo.
Hmm... what exactly does Pinguy mean anyway?
-
Hmm... what exactly does Pinguy mean anyway?
My real nick name in life is Pingu because I have flat feet, (don't laugh :) ). As I couldn't use Pingu as my alias because of the cartoon I used Pinguy instead. As Linux mascot is a penguin I just thought Pinguy was a suitable name for a Linux based Distro.
Pinguy is also very easy for people to remember and to spell.

Haha, that is very cool.
Oh, and Dont worry about the flat feet, I work in hospital in an opeerating room, Ive seen much worse than flat feet!
j
-
bah, I'm flat footed also, who cares, it's the same has having green or brown eyes... yeah it gives us a distinctive walk, yeah... so? :)
Any way, I like the logo, the proposal of wallpaper is actually quite good. But, not in elementary color scheme... thousands times better then the present default wall on Ubuntu 10.10. LOL
-
Hi
No not a big fan of the ubuntu style look either, but just wanted to see what it would look like.
Will work on some of the other points you mentioned.
jason
-
take a look
Elementry is based on TANGO so only tango colour scheme to be used from any suggestions now on!
that said see below.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/pinguyloadsplash%201900x1200%20tango%20grey.png

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/poweredby%20tango%20grey.png
all feed back appreciated.
-
another one ... ... ... ...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/default%20grey%20faded%20logo.png
With regards to the logos for the menu bar etc this will be based on tango colour scheme so i am guessing we should go blue or dark grey.
currently ubuntu is on this logo but Kubuntu, Lubuntu and Xubuntu are all blue themed so perhaps the grey or even another option altogether would be good to distinguish PINGUYOS?
Tango has a delibrately small range of colours to choose from which helps !
-
only allowed 4 attachments so 5th one is linked
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/22x22%20yellow%20mint.png
forgot to mention mint is of course green
so a few options from the tango pallet below
-
I really like 22x22 grey mint.png but the logo needs to be white/light gray, using a dark theme you can't see the logo as it's transparent, and probably give it a white/light gray thin line around the circle.
The pier over a bay wallpaper with the logo looks really good.
(http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/9518/desk1004.th.png) (http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/9518/desk1004.png)
-
try again!
well spotted on the transparency! thats the trouble working with a white background!
See attached

This needs to 24x24 not 22x22.
the 22x22 is for the icon inside the mint menu. For that I was just thinking of using just the logo in black, not inside the circle.
By the way thanks for helping me. I really suck at this sort of thing. Making logos just isn't my thing :D
EDIT#
Don't worry about the 22x22 image the one that you made looks awesome inside the mint menu. see Desk 1_006.png Just need one by 24x24 now so it looks clearer as the menu button and 64x64 for the GDM login .
I don't need this any time soon. I have only just started 10.10 and it's going to take me a good while before I finish it.
-
Loved the wallpapers. The buttons. Everything...
jason, it's amazingly cool. Great job. :)
-
24 x 24 DONE
perhaps we can eventually expand to a full icon set of our own!! :D
-
thanks Fatgiant for feedback
no worries Pinguy.
i have wanted to contribute to a distro for a while and PINGUY OS stirred me to action!
Fatgiant see the original concrete wallpaper I sent to Pinguy!
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/flowRoot2836.png
also another icon offering
Guys just let me know whats needed!
-
Jason, I only use clean wallpapers, nothing with textures, pictures, photos, anything, maybe a few gradients, if they are delicate and simple enough.
You see I use 2 monitors, and one of them is usually empty, or with small windows, so the wallpaper is staring at me all day, after a while even the simplest one become tiresome and hard to look at.
I loved your recent wallpapers, due to being clean and simple. This one with the concrete, sorry, I can see how well done it is, but, I can't bring myself to use it... :)
Any way, great job, really, really great job.
BTW, I use the Faenza icons with the theme Equinox glass, this last icon, should fit in perfectly... :)
-
Wow that looks much better.
You have pretty much covered everything. The only one I need now is for the Plymouth Theme.
http://love2spooge.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2vkveo
That's the Plymouth theme Pinguy OS is using. There are two images in there for the Ubuntu logo, they just need changing for the Pinguy OS logo.
Also could you do the squaremintblue.png at 64x64 so I can use it for the GDM login.
-
The more I look at the squaremintblue.png the more I like it. Could you make one like that but round for the main menu button 24x24 to see what it looks like.
-
64x64 ;D
let me know if this works, never worked on splash before!

24x24 :)

Totally understand where your coming from I get the same with wall papers all the time!
will work on simple & clean! any colour preference?
-

Almost there. The images just need to be on a transparent background, but it works.
Also could the squaremintblue24x24.png be round? same colour and affects just round instead of square.
-
ok both the logo and the alt logo are on transparent background ..
will try and save as a different type of png file and re post!
-
OK, cool.
Once it's debraded and got all the new Pinguy logo's in place I will take some screenshots to show you what it looks like.
-
two options
;D
-
two options
;D
As it blue it doesn't need a white line around the circle as it will look fine on a dark or light theme.
These are looking really great :)
-
are still got the stroke on the circle underneath !
will get that taken off shortly
regards
Jason
-
new and improved now without a pointless white edge around them!!!
-
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/Pinguy-Ubuntu.zip
should now be without white background.
-
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/Pinguy-Ubuntu.zip
should now be without white background.
That worked :)
That's it. All of the Ubuntu branding is now gone. Thank you for doing that for me.
If you do any more wallpapers I will be more then happy to add them to Pinguy OS.
-
no problem.
Any other artwork needed please let me know.
Jason
-
Just clicked through this thread and just wanted to say props Jason. Solid work all around.
~Jeff
-
many thanks!
-
You have done a cracking job on this. Much better than I could of ever imagined.
I have posted them on the FaceBook group.
-
was a pleasure
is it on an update so that I can load it all up?
what about an 800x600 GRUB background or the Login screen?
-
It will be in 10.10
The login screen is done. I will probably leave the grub the way it is, but we can look into this later once I get round to working on the grub.
-
This is what the menu, Plymouth and login screen looks like now.

There's really no rush for it but if you could do the logo for the site I would owe you a beer ;)
I was thinking of using the text/logo from this image: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/default%20grey%20faded%20logo.png
But it must be on a transparent background 281x98
-
no problem will get it done shortly,
most of the work is done just need to separate out the text logo from the wall paper and make them right size for the site.
forget the beer , I'll take the OS !
-
Totally understand where your coming from I get the same with wall papers all the time!
will work on simple & clean! any colour preference?
Anything really, as long as not TOO dark or TOO distractive... Wallpapers for ME, must become invisible after a few enjoyable seconds. Like the Theme, I need to stop seeing it after enjoying it for a few minutes. I get distracted too easily... LOL
A.D.D. FTW!!!
-
Hi Pinguy
let me know what you think
-
Hi Fatgiant,
let me know how close this is
-
jason for the logo could you keep the same one as I have got now on the site, and just replace the star with 10.04.1 in it with the image you are using as your avatar.
-
coming very soon!
-
There's really no rush for it but if you could do the logo for the site I would owe you a beer ;)

OK what font are you using for this? if I can get the font then that will make life easier for me. Other wise we need to mix a png/jpg and svg to get the header which is just messy!
-
I'm not sure what the font is. I used this site to make it http://creatr.cc/creatr/
-
tis done two options
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/webheaderblend.png
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/webheader%202%20colour.png
-
It looks good but the sizing is wrong
(http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/8899/desk1001j.png)
It needs to be 281x98
-
just changing!!
-
done!
check the link i sent via Pm and you can see it there
i forgot to export page instead of selection ???
-
got it. but it needs to be on a transparent background and saved as a .png
-
hmm it was ...
try this
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/webheader%20page%20281%20x%2098.png
-
I think it should come down a bit and moved more to the right. I can't really play about with positioning of it on the site because I would have to redo the css and html template.
-
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/webheader%20page%20281%20x%2098.png
centered better in area and moved down a couple of clicks
-
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/webheader%20page%20281%20x%2098.png
centered better in area and moved down a couple of clicks
That's the same file.
-
Hi
the file has been updated by the way.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/webheaderV3largeColour.png
regards
Jason
-
Thanks, but the text needs to fill more of the area. There shouldn't be much of a gap around the 281x98, and the blue colour for "Pinguy" should be lighter and the pink? (colour blind) for "OS" needs to be a darker red/pink.
If you overlay the old web header with the new one they should be the same accept for the star logo should be the logo for Pinguy OS. (http://pinguy-os.sourceforge.net/images/shortcut-icon.png) but about the same size as the star.
At the moment the text is to far over to the right. it should fill more of the area so there isn't much of a gap to it's left and needs to come down some more. If the text was larger it may fit better, and to be honest the reflection can go. It can't be seen on the old header on the site so I don't think its a big deal if it's left off.
-
ok
downloaded the original and layed it out over the new one..
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3971551/webheaderV3largeColour.png
should be ok now
