dvb support? totem.
« on: September 02, 2010, 03:37:46 pm »
Hi there,

First off, new here. So hello. :)

I have pinguy os installed on my laptop, running perfectly. very nice distro, impressed actually. all just works. :)

I remember seeing your thread on ubuntuforums.org, finally got around to testing. I was one of the folks who requested a 32 bit version. I have the 64 bit version installed on my laptop, but i have a 32bit version booting up on a usb pen drive which i will be installing on my desktop (for ps3 media server) since i am impressed with this distro.  :)

I'll get to my point of this post. My fathers pc currently runs windows xp in which has a tv capture card which pipes the video from our cable box (main tv), through to my dads desktop. (it only picks up the channel thats being piped through). I have previously installed ubuntu on his pc in which he liked as ubuntu did everything he needed it to.
But the only issue stopping the transition over to ubuntu was the tv card. after checking out linuxtv.org and ubuntuforums for a solution. the card is support.

running "lspci" in the terminal under ubuntu and pinguy both show the video card. (Phillips). I can find out the model if required.
Under ubuntu 9.10 previously i installed different video software which did not work, but i did try XawTV from the ubuntu software centre. This displayed the tv channel being piped from the cable box. But got no sound.

Reading ubuntu forums i did notice that your distro had dvb support added to totem. How do i go about getting this to work?. I have had your live distro booting up on my fathers pc. Do i need to install it before it will pickup the tv card? (running lspci in the terminal does show the card). how do i get the card to display the tv through totem?.

thanks. :)

Hi teh-p3nsi0n3r  :)

The way it sounds the card does not support DVB. It's more and likely an analog tuner. For this you will need to install TVTime.

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install tvtime

Hi pinguy,

Thanks for your quick reply. :)

seems the card is supported. Read this from the tv time website.

Quote
saa7134

The saa7134 driver supports newer capture cards based on the Philips SAA7134 chip. This driver is included with Linux 2.6 kernels.

tvtime should work fine with this driver. Known issues:

   1. If you cannot tune to any channels, your card may not be detected by the driver. Please see this discussion on our problems page.
   2. This driver can return I/O errors when there is no signal or a poor signal. These errors are not allowed by the V4L2 standard, and should be fixed in more recent driver versions. These errors will cause tvtime to output warnings to the console, and potentially crash under tvtime 0.9.12.

Can install tv time straight to the live usb before installing to hard disc? then run tv time from the pen drive?.

You should be able to. Best bet is to just try. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

I got TV time up and running/installed on the usb pen drive. i cant figure out how to get it to recognise the feed(cable channel that's playing from the cable box). During installation, it asked to pick PAL, NTSC etc.. I picked pal and region as Europe. Once TV time was launched it didn't show any picture. On the TV time website under supported cards. "Philips SAA7134 chip" my dads card is actually "Philips SAA7130 chip" which does recognise  when typing "lspci".
According to the below article, kernels 2.6 and above should support this chip.

http://sites.google.com/site/jobinau2/saa7130basedtvtunercardunderlinux

Some of the information in the above link i found to be completely over my head (although i did understand what was being said). But the article does recommend (as you suggested) to use TV time. So I'm at that stage at the moment. From what i gathered from that article, i need to load the driver?.
I was able to get "tvtime-scanner" open which launched a completely different application. I wasn't quite sure where to go from there.

If you have any ideas, they would be completely appreciated.

This will show you how to setup TVtime. You don't need to worry about drivers they are installed, you just need to make sure you use the right settings in TVtime.
Once you have the right setting right click on TVtime and choose "Channel Management" and then "scan"

That's the settings I used for the UK.
