Saving settings/sessions? (USB Persistence)
« on: September 22, 2010, 01:26:28 pm »
I am quite new to Pinquy and am loving it so far!  I figured out how to change the Keyboard to USA from the default UK, under System/Control Center/Hardware/Keyboard but am having trouble figuring out how to save settings/preferences while running from a Live USB.
I would love to be able to save stuff on the USB drive, as I have been doing with Puppy Linux.  I have looked into setting Session preferences, but to no avail.  Do I need to create a swap file?  Thanks in advance!

Try http://www.linuxliveusb.com/
And set it up so you have a good size persistence.

More info about persistence:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ubuntu-804-usb-hard-drive-install/
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-ubuntu-804-persistent-install-via-the-live-cd/

I haven't found a good way of setting up a USB with persistence so there maybe someone here that has a better way of doing it.

Thanks for the quick reply!
I had been using UNetbootin. I tried a couple of goes with the LinuxLiveUSB, but don't seem to be able to get persistence working. I thought there may be a 'Persistant' boot option based on the Lili documentation, but no luck.
I guess I may have to just bite the bullet and try a dual boot install option... Will update if find any success :)

Yay! I got it working...

I ended up sticking with http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ and following the instructions found here: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/diskimg/readme.txt

You basically need to extract the casper-rw file to root of USB drive and edit the boot options config to append "persistent"

It works like a charm, and I am  ;D

Very cool, and thanks for the info. UNetbootin is now on the distro as a default program so that link will be helpful.

Nice work! This thread should definitely go to 'closed' threads, and be referenced for others. Thanks GibbyG.

My pleasure!

I also used http://www.pendrivelinux.com/casper-rw-creator-make-a-persistent-file-from-windows/ Casper-RW Creator to create a 2Gig casper-rw file, since the 512M one included on the Unetbootin site was quite small!

I agree that this can be moved to the Closed section. Do I need to do anything to do that?

p.s. I was so happy with PinguyOS that I've already set-up my Dell Inspiron e1405 as a dual-boot with Windows XP...

I am really glad you like it that much that you installed it  :)

I was going to leave this open until a how-to has been written up so people can ask questions how its done. Once the topic gets moved to closed it's locked.
